Mayfair Aesthetics Laser & Skin Clinics
If laser didn't work at your last clinic — here's why it probably failed
You've already spent money on laser that didn't work. We understand why that makes you cautious about trying again. Here's what we do differently — and why it changes the result.
Book a Free Consultation →Laser hair removal has been around for almost 20 years. In that time, technology, client comfort, safety and efficacy have improved massively. That being said, laser hair removal is not always effective — and there are a wide range of reasons why this might be so. Here, we explain every single one of them.
Your appointment was too short to do the job properly
Does the clinic prioritise treatments being carried out thoroughly, professionally and to the very highest standards of safety and efficacy? Many salons and clinics offering laser hair removal prioritise squeezing in as many clients as possible.
"We charge more than many competitors because we may see only 2 clients in just over an hour — when competitors have squeezed in 6."
If a treatment is rushed, not enough shots are used, areas may be missed, or you may be at higher risk of side effects. We also safely over-deliver on laser energy rather than do the bare minimum. There is a reason why so many of our clients recommend their friends and family to us.
Your hair colour may not have been assessed at all
An initial consultation should include an assessment of your hair to ensure it is suitable for treatment. Many clinics skip this entirely and book everyone — which isn't great, as laser won't be effective for everyone.
Laser works by heating the pigment (melanin) within each hair. There are two types: brownish-black eumelanin and reddish-yellow pheomelanin. Laser heats eumelanin effectively — but has no effect on pheomelanin at all. White hair contains no melanin whatsoever.
For clients with dark ginger hair, we recommend a patch test. If any change in hair growth is noted around 8 weeks after the patch test, a reasonable result may be achievable. If no change occurs, laser is not recommended.
Your hair type wasn't matched to the right treatment
Very fine hair lacks enough pigmentation to reach the temperature required to damage the follicle. The type of hair also matters enormously:
Terminal hair
Thicker, darker hair — usually the ideal candidate for laser. Some people have extremely fine terminal hair, which may not respond as strongly.
Vellus hair ("peach fuzz")
Fine baby hair. Will not be reduced by laser and can in some cases trigger paradoxical growth — stimulating fine vellus hairs to become coarser terminal hairs.
This is why we assess hair type carefully before treatment and only target thicker, darker terminal hair. Once vellus hairs have become terminal, they can then be treated — so it's not the end of the world if you have to wait.
The wrong laser wavelength was used for your skin and hair type
All lasers emit light at a specific wavelength that penetrates to different depths within the skin. Choosing the right one for your hair and skin type is essential for results.
| Laser Type | Wavelength | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| ND Yag | 1064nm | Deeper penetration. Ideal for darker skin types and coarser hair (pubic, underarms). |
| Diode / Speed | 810nm | A versatile all-rounder for most hair types and skin colours. |
| Alexandrite / Alex | 755nm | Most shallow penetration — best for finer hair and lighter skin. |
| Soprano Titanium / Platinum | All 3 wavelengths | The gold standard. Combining all three wavelengths delivers the most comprehensive coverage for all hair and skin types simultaneously. |
At Mayfair Aesthetics, we use only the authentic, top-of-the-range Soprano system with all three wavelengths — because no single wavelength is optimal for every client.
It might not have been a real laser at all
Unfortunately, there are many counterfeit, knock-off lasers on the UK market being used in clinics every day. Low quality, low power — and simply not safe.
A "Soprano Titanium" can be found for sale online for under £3,000. The authentic, top-of-the-range Soprano Titanium actually costs upwards of £100,000, comes with 2 handpieces, and will be 50 times more effective than a counterfeit device.
If a clinic is offering extremely low prices, ask yourself: have they invested in the very best authentic equipment, or have they bought a cheap ineffective knock-off? At Mayfair Aesthetics, we use only real, authentic, fully functioning, top-of-the-range Soprano lasers. No fakes, no knock-offs.
The staff weren't properly trained — or trained at all
Laser hair removal should only be carried out by a specialist trained to NVQ Level 4 or higher in laser and light treatments, as well as specific manufacturer training on the device they're using. Without these qualifications, operators are uninsured and in breach of Special Treatments Licence requirements.
"I've spoken to applicants who were performing laser treatments with no NVQ qualification — their only training was 'being shown how the laser works by the girls in the salon.'"
NVQ Level 4 minimum
All Mayfair Aesthetics staff hold at least NVQ Level 4 in laser and light treatments — a non-negotiable requirement.
Alma Lasers device training
Every therapist attends in-depth training at Alma Lasers (Soprano manufacturer) before seeing any client.
15+ years in-house mentoring
Followed by 3–5 days intensive training with our laser training manager Luz, who has 15 years' experience — 12 of them with Soprano lasers specifically.
We are regularly checked by the special treatments licence departments of our local councils and have been endorsed by Trusted Laser — an independent body overseeing standards across the laser industry.
The lasers weren't properly maintained
Some clinics skimp on servicing to save money. This results in low-power, underperforming lasers — and therefore consistently poor results for clients, even when everything else is done right.
At Mayfair Aesthetics, our lasers are checked and maintained regularly to ensure they operate at the correct power levels. If a breakdown occurs, our repair team can often be on site within a couple of hours — and we keep spare handpieces on hand to avoid any interruption to your treatment course.
Wrong preparation and wrong treatment spacing
Shaving protocol
The laser wastes energy heating up the stubble above the skin — meaning less energy reaches the root. Shave 8–12 hours before your appointment, and again mid-cycle (2–4 weeks after treatment, when shedding begins).
Treatment spacing
Laser only affects hair in its anagen (active growth) phase — typically 10–15% of hairs at any one time. Face: every 4 weeks initially. Body: every 6 weeks. Spacing too close together means treating hair that isn't ready.
Hormonal factors can make treatment more resistant
Hormones play a significant role in how hair responds to laser — and some conditions make treatment inherently more challenging. This doesn't mean laser won't work; it means expectations and maintenance plans need to be realistic.
We successfully treat many clients with PCOS and hormonal conditions. We're simply honest that more sessions are likely needed, and that regular top-up treatments may be a long-term reality for managing hair growth effectively.
A small number of people are naturally more resistant to treatment
Laser works very well for around 95% of people (excluding those with unsuitable hair colour or significant hormonal conditions). For the vast majority, a 60–90% hair reduction is achieved after a full course at Mayfair Aesthetics.
"Just like some people never get ill while others catch every cold — some people are simply naturally more resistant to treatment. Their bodies repair laser damage more efficiently."
It's important to note that the bikini area, face and sometimes underarms are more resistant than areas like arms, legs, chest and back — so more sessions are typically required in these zones.
In very rare cases, laser may not achieve the expected reduction at all. We would always rather be honest about this upfront than take your money and disappoint you.
