Laser finds hair by its pigment. Where there is little or no pigment, it has nothing to aim at. Electrolysis treats the follicle directly, so the colour of the hair does not matter.

Electrolysis is precise work. Each follicle is treated individually with a thin sterile probe, so you pay for the length of the session rather than for a body area.

Does it hurt, and how long does it take
Does it hurt?
It is not entirely painless. The sensation lasts a fraction of a second per hair, and most clients describe it as a quick, warm prick. You feel it for yourself at the patch test, before you book any treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
Hairs in the anagen (active growth) phase react best to treatment, so a series of appointments over several months is needed to catch every follicle at the right stage.
Your timeline depends on your hormones, how dense the hair is, and how you have removed it before, including waxing and plucking. Larissa will go through this with you at your first appointment.

Before and after your appointment
How to prepare, and what to do afterwards
Leave the hair to grow
Hair needs to be at least 3mm long so it can be lifted out with tweezers. Do not pluck, wax or thread for at least two to three weeks before your appointment. If the hair is too short, or has been plucked or waxed and is not there, we cannot treat it.
Your skin
- Stop retinol, chemical peels and exfoliating acids at least 10 days before, to avoid extra irritation.
- No sunbathing in the 48 hours before your treatment or patch test.
- We can only treat skin in healthy condition. Sunburnt skin, or patches of eczema or psoriasis, cannot be treated.
On the day
- Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours before your appointment. Well-hydrated skin responds better to treatment and usually feels more comfortable.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol and a lot of sugar. They dehydrate your skin and make nerve endings more sensitive.
- Come with a clean face. Skip makeup, lotion and deodorant on the area, as they can clog pores and get in the way.
After each session
- Keep the treated area out of direct sun for at least one to two weeks after every session. If it cannot be covered, use sun protection.
Can anyone have electrolysis?
When we cannot treat you
Some medical conditions rule electrolysis out. Others need your doctor's clearance first. Please tell us about any of these before you book.
Treatment is not possible
- Electronic implants. Pacemakers, defibrillators and cochlear implants can malfunction from an external electrical current. If you have a pacemaker, you should not have electrolysis on any part of your body.
- Active cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- Blood-clotting disorders. Haemophilia or severe bleeding problems make skin punctures unsafe.
- Active infections or viruses in the treatment area, such as cold sores (herpes), impetigo or hepatitis. These prevent safe healing.
- Pregnancy. Because of hormonal changes and potential risks, electrolysis is generally not recommended.
- A history of keloid scars.
Check with your doctor first
- Uncontrolled chronic illness. Severe uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, lupus, a previous cancer or epilepsy need medical clearance.
- Medication. After strong retinoids or acne medication such as Accutane, you need to wait 6 to 12 months from stopping.
