How often should I have laser hair removal?
If you are thinking of going ahead with a course of laser hair removal, it is important to consider the spacing of your bookings to ensure the treatment is as effective as possible. If you leave too long or too short a gap between appointments, you may find the the treatment is less effective than if the treatments are spaced correctly.
Laser hair removal works by damaging hair roots and bulbs when they are in the Anagen phase of growth. Hair that is in the Catagen or Telogen phase of growth will not normally be effected by the laser treatment. For most people, roughly 10-15% of the hair in any particular area will be at Anagen phase at any time.
Face and body appointments are spaced differently
As hair on the face tends to grow more quickly than hair on the body, laser hair removal appointments for the face usually start out spaced every 4 weeks and treatments for the body start out spaced every 6 weeks. As you progress through your course you should find that you have less hair growth and the hair that does grow appears more slowly so after your 4th treatment the laser therapist will discuss your results with you and possibly recommend spacing remaining facial appointments 4-6 weeks apart and body appointments 6-8 weeks apart.
Good responders to laser hair removal should see a roughly 10-15% reduction in hair per treatment (hair in the Anagen phase treated on each visit). Most people will go for 6 to 8 treatments per area, possibly more for more resistant areas such as the face or private area. This means that a course of treatments will take anything from 6 to 9 months or more.
Stick to your appointment schedule if possible
Holidays, business trips and busy periods at work can all interfere with your course proceeding as intended. If you can, ensure that you space your treatments correctly and look forward to a smoother, hair free future.
